Father of six daughters and grandfather to a beautiful baby girl, Sh. Yahya Abu Sumayah was born to a Roman Catholic Italian family in Edmonton, Alberta. Growing up, he found discrepancies between practice and belief, and as a result decided to study the bible for himself. After continuous disappointment and confusion, he made the decision to explore beyond Roman Catholicism. Drawn to comparative religion, the fundamentals of Islam resonated with him. He already believed in the oneness of a creator, A God, and wished to find a religion that was in accordance with these beliefs. With the guidance of Allah, he found and embraced Islam shortly after coming across the English translation of the Quran at just 19 years of age. The autobiography of Malcolm X and his journey to Islam was a large motivator in Sh. Yahya’s growing interest in Islam. In a sense, the transformation of Malcolm X inspired his own. At this point, he had no Muslim friends, was not aware of any mosques in the city of Edmonton, and it was not until a year later that he was introduced to the Muslim community in Edmonton. Many years later, he had the honor of attending Madinah University in Saudi Arabia, and he was privileged to have met Sheikh Ibn Baz, as well as Sheikh Al Uthaymeen (May Allah have mercy on them) during his time there. Today, he is the acting Imam of Sakinah Community Center in Scarborough, Ontario. Before his move to Toronto, he was the former imam of Masijid Sahabah in Edmonton from the years 1998 to 2014. He also helped establish Dar Al Sunnah Institute of Edmonton in 2012.
